Our Pasifika Community
The Mahurangi is fortunate enough to have a large, Pacific Island community living among it, and a large portion of these families come from the island of Kiribati (the 'ti' in Kiribati is pronounced 's'). This is largely due to a successful relationship between capsicum producers, Southern Paprika, and the people of Kiribati, who face the very real threat of rising sea levels and ocean acidification. Finding a future for the people of Kiribati has become the priority of it's leaders. Southern Paprika are now one of the largest employers of Kiribati people in New Zealand (over 100) and they work in collaboration with the Kiribati people to enable them time to work in the glass houses as well as time to return home and visit family.
